Polmont Borstal p3 by Donald Blamey. John Breslin opened the discussion by putting down a few myths about gays and explaining the aims of SMG. The boys seemed surprised to learn that we were gay and that we were quite open about it. Kenny stated that, although he was not gay, some of the people he worked amongst were as were a few of his friends. The discussion was quite lively and at times hilarious with boys and staff giving their views and asking questions such as: "What causes homosexuality?"; Can it be cured?" (the thought of aversion therapy seemed appalling to them) and "Would you rather be heterosexual?" One member of staff expressed his disgust at gays who approach people in public toilets. After the discussion was closed many of the boys stayed behind and spoke to us about our jobs and other things of general interest and a few asked for more information about SMG. Several of the people present said that a lot of doubt and misunderstanding had been cleared up and that they had learned a lot from the discussion. For this alone I think the visit was very worthwhile.

Gay Borstal Shock Report Horror p2 No-one who reads a report by Donal Blamey in this organ will be surprised to have read the 'Sunday Mail's' sensational and bang up to the mimute report on the SMG visit to Polmont Borstal in June this year. Half of the front page of this celebrated tit and bum sheet was taken up proclaiming the legend: "GAY TALKS IN BORSTAL" - "Shock Visitor For Boys". There followed the usual story about explanations being demanded , Governors being unavaliable for comment and Ian Dunn giving a quptable quote. Need I say that not a word of what was actually said by John Breslin or Donald Blamey at the BOrstal was repeated in the rag. Congratulations to Donald for his cool frankness during his interview and to the 'Mail' for the years oldest and least snsational 'Sensation'. |
