A huge bundle of paper. The Council refused the change of use for social purposes, but, as far as I can see, before there was a Local Appeal Hearing of th Secretary of State, Glasgow District accepted a second planning application. Various enforcement orders were made by Glasgow.

1981

A thick bundle to do with an appeal to the Scercretary of State for Scotland  re change of use of 534 Sauchiehall St. It appears the Glasgow Planning dept had not approved change of use from an office to include social functions.

   
30 May 1969 SYHA was granted permission to have a typing school in the premises    
21 Oct 1980 Letter from BS say he remembers  in mid 50s attending the SHYA at 534 for a meeting to explain benefits. Also a committee meeting went on in another room    
sep 1977 Letter from planning dept alledging use of premises for discos with loud music and flashing lights. To be investigated by dept.    
19 Apr 1978 City of Glasgow refuses planning permission "in respect of part use of offices at 534 Sauchiehall Street, G2 as a social centre (unlicensed)." Reasons given: Detrimental to the amenity of the surrounding residential development". ... aback court area is inapproipited  for  a development proposed. "The access arrangements to the premises through a common close use by commercial properties fronting Sauchiehall St is undesirable."

Letter from John Holliday, solicitor with Archibal Sharp & son, pointing out 534 had previously been granted planning permission as:
May 1969 for change of use from typing school [possibly called The Scottish School of typing ] to an office. "for planning permission in respect of the use of a typing school ... as a District Office"
Aug 1976 Owner Myles Callaghan application for change of use of former dancing school and conference club to offices. No mention of typing or dwelling houses.

   
21 Sep 1978 Origina letter from Neil Carmichael MP from House of Commons re opening day at Glasgow Gay Centre. "I will certainly try to be along although how long I will be able to stay will be dependent on other pressures. I hope there is a good attendance and you have a successful and enjoyable Open Day."

2 May 1981 Malcolm Crowe to Scottish Development Dept. "Planning appeals: 534 Sauchiehall St, Glasgow. I write formally to withdraw the above appeal, following the grant on 16 April 1981 of planning permission by the District Council."
